Caring for Boots and Misty: Thoughtful Rabbit Care at Home

Boots and Misty have been part of Hols Pets since 2025, and they’ve become two very familiar little faces over time.

Each time I return to care for them, it’s a continuation rather than a fresh start. Rabbits are naturally cautious animals, so building trust happens gradually, through calm, consistent handling and allowing them to approach in their own time.

That trust has grown with every visit, to the point where they now come hopping over for their brush, relaxed and settled in my presence. It’s a lovely reminder of how much familiarity matters for rabbits.

A Routine Built Around Their Needs

When I’m caring for Boots and Misty, their routine stays consistent to help them feel comfortable and secure.

In the mornings and evenings, they’re given a selection of fresh herbs, parsley, dill, mint and basil. These aren’t just favourites; they’re also beneficial for rabbits. Herbs are gentle on their digestive system, provide variety, and encourage natural foraging behaviours through different scents and textures.

Fresh hay is provided at every visit, morning and evening. Hay is the most important part of a rabbit’s diet, supporting digestion and helping to keep their teeth worn down naturally. Keeping it clean and topped up regularly ensures they always have access to what they need.

Their pellets are scatter fed within their outdoor enclosure rather than placed in a bowl. This encourages natural foraging behaviour, keeping them mentally stimulated and physically active. Instead of eating in one place, they spend time exploring and engaging with their environment, which is far more enriching for them.

Clean, Fresh and Consistent Care

Rabbits are very clean animals, and maintaining their environment is an important part of their care.

Boots and Misty’s litter tray is cleaned at each visit to keep their space fresh and hygienic. This helps prevent odour, supports their health, and keeps their living area comfortable. Fresh water is also provided morning and evening, ensuring they always have access to clean drinking water.

It’s the consistency of these small details that makes a real difference.

Why Rabbits Benefit from a Dedicated Pet Sitter

Rabbits are often misunderstood as low-maintenance pets, but they require attentive and knowledgeable care.

While neighbours, friends or family may be able to help, rabbits need more than a quick check-in. Their diet, environment and behaviour all need to be monitored properly, and subtle changes can easily be missed without experience.

Having a dedicated pet sitter means:

  • Their routine remains consistent

  • Their diet is managed correctly

  • Their environment stays clean and safe

  • Their behaviour is monitored for any changes

Most importantly, they stay in their own familiar environment, which is where they feel safest.

Familiarity Over Time

Each time I return to Boots and Misty, that sense of familiarity is already there. They know their routine, they recognise a familiar presence, and they settle quickly. That continuity helps reduce stress and allows them to stay relaxed while their owners are away. It’s something that builds over time, and it’s a big part of what I aim to provide through Hols Pets.
