Introducing Silvervine: A Natural Way to Enrich Your Cat’s Playtime

I was recently gifted some natural silvervine sticks to try, and before introducing anything new to the cats I care for, I always like to test it myself first. So, the silvervine sticks were trialled at home with my two girls, Mia and Trixie.

Mia is already absolutely bonkers, so I had a feeling these would take things up a level… and I was right. She was straight into it, up and down the stairs, flinging it into the air, rolling all over it like it was the best thing she’d ever discovered.

Naturally, Trixie (her daughter) wasn’t going to be left out. And despite being the more chilled one, she quickly joined in… and turned just as chaotic. Like mother, like daughter. It was one of those moments where you can instantly see how engaged they are, completely focused, playful, and in their element.

Once I’d seen how they responded, and felt confident in how safe and enriching they were, I then introduced them during visits, always with the owner’s permission. I take a considered approach when bringing anything new into a cat’s routine, so this was something I trialled gradually and only where appropriate.

The response was immediate.

First Reactions: Curiosity to Full Engagement

Jacob and James, the Maine Coon brothers, were the first to try them. Within moments, they were completely engaged, rolling, rubbing, chewing and interacting with the sticks in a way that felt very natural and instinctive. It was one of those moments where you can clearly see enrichment happening in real time.

Ted and Tilly reacted in a very similar way. They’re already playful cats, but the silvervine seemed to hold their attention for much longer than typical toys. There was a noticeable shift from casual interest to full focus.

Belle and Ariel were just as intrigued. Watching them explore, paw, and interact with the sticks showed how much they were enjoying the experience on their own terms.

Why Silvervine Works So Well

Silvervine is a natural plant that contains compounds known to stimulate cats’ senses, often even more effectively than catnip.

For many cats, it encourages:

  • Rolling and rubbing (natural scent-marking behaviour)

  • Chewing (which can support dental health)

  • Increased play and activity

  • A release of energy followed by a more relaxed state

What stood out to me was how varied each cat’s response was, while still being consistently positive. Some were more playful, others more relaxed, but all were engaged.

More Than Just a Toy

What I liked most about introducing silvervine during visits is that it adds another layer of enrichment. For cats, especially those staying at home while their owners are away, enrichment is really important.

It helps:

  • Prevent boredom

  • Reduce stress

  • Encourage natural behaviours

  • Make their environment feel more stimulating and engaging

These sticks are simple, but effective. They don’t replace interaction, but they complement it really well.

A Thoughtful Addition to Visits

I always aim to bring a calm, considered approach to my visits, and part of that is looking at small ways to enhance a cat’s experience. Introducing something like silvervine, with the owner’s permission, is just one example of how I can do that. It’s not about adding more, it’s about adding the right things, in the right way.

It was really lovely to see how much Jacob and James, Ted and Tilly, and Belle and Ariel all enjoyed their time with the silvervine sticks. Sometimes it’s the simplest additions that make the biggest difference, especially when they tap into a cat’s natural instincts.

Until next time, happy pet parenting!
