Pip’s First Solo Pet Sit – With Love, and in Memory of Rufus

As a passionate pet sitter, I often find myself immersed in the warmth and joy that comes from caring for our furry friends. There’s an emotional bond that forms not only between pets and their owners but also between pets and sitters like me. In this post, I want to share Pip’s first solo pet sit and reflect on the beautiful connection we’ve all shared – including a very special boy we missed deeply this time around.

Walking through the door without Rufus there to greet me felt quietly different. It was the first time I’d been back without his gentle presence, and the absence of his wise, calm eyes and soft steps was truly felt. Rufus had such a grounding energy – always content to potter around the garden, sit peacefully by my side, or simply observe the world with that thoughtful little gaze of his. He had a way of making everything feel steady, safe, and full of quiet understanding.

Pip and I both felt it – the space where Rufus would usually be. She looked for him in the usual spots during those first moments, as if expecting her brother to appear from the hallway or hop up beside us on the sofa. It was a gentle reminder of just how strong their bond was, and how much he meant to her, to their home, and to me.

But as the days went on, Pip really came into her own. Her energy, her playful spirit, and her cheeky little personality were a comfort and a joy. We went on long walks through the village and fields, where she led the way with enthusiasm, tail wagging proudly.

One of our favourite outings this week was when Pip met my dog Lilly for the first time. We went for a lovely walk down to the café, and I think Pip really enjoyed the company. The two of them hit it off straight away, darting up and down the banks of the woods together, tails wagging and ears flapping in the breeze. It was so lovely to see Pip so full of life and joy, sharing those playful moments with a new friend.

Back at home, she claimed all the comfiest spots (as expected!), spent hours sunbathing, and chased her ball with gusto in the garden. We shared cuddles, sunshine, and a few giggles too.

Pip’s first solo pet sit was filled with warmth, play, and that same sparkle she’s always had. But it was also a tender, meaningful reminder of Rufus – a beloved friend who may be gone, but will never be forgotten. His memory lives on in the routines he helped shape, the quiet moments he once filled, and the love that continues to surround Pip every day.

Rufus, thank you for being part of my journey. You brought peace, strength, and so much love. And to Pip – thank you for the cuddles, the zoomies, and the snuggles. You’re doing your big brother proud.
